Mare Island

Local History • Nature • Hike

Northbay flatland

What was once the US Navy’s first Naval Ammunition Depot is now a peaceful 300 acre preserve of wetlands and trails, offering views of San Pablo Bay and both the Sacramento & Napa Rivers. Off limits to the public until 2008, today Mare Island is home to both the Navy’s oldest cemetery and oldest Naval Chapel in the Pacific. Stroll the paved Shorelines Preserve Scenic Vista Trail to take in some stunning scenery & wildlife, and find the Spirit Ship at the highest point on the “Island”. Explore down by the Strait a bit to come upon the historical Naval Shipyard, Dry Dock, and Historic Park Foundation Artifacts Museum.
