Discovery Camp

Ages 9-12  |  Full Day  |  Extended Care  |  Staff Ratio 1:7

Discovery camp is the perfect choice for adventurous kids looking for a full day of outdoor fun.  Campers spend each day participating in new activities that take them to cool spots around the Bay Area.  An emphasis on outdoor and environmental education is seen in activities such as paddle boarding and kayaking in the Bay, hiking through Muir Beach and Woods, visiting the Shorebird Nature Center and Crab Cove, completing the Ropes Course, swimming at Strawberry Canyon or bouldering at Indian Rock Park.

Camp Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:30A - 4:00P

• This schedule is only a sample of potential activities.  Schedule is influenced by weather conditions, resource availability and staffing capability.  All questions or concerns should be brought to the attention of Rachel Herrmann, Youth Programs Manager: rachelcaladv@berkeley.edu
• Parents are responsible for having their children arrive on time in the morning and their transportation home when the class ends. Being on time for Discovery Camp is IMPORTANT since many activities require an entire day and can be at some distance. If you know your child will be late for a certain day, please inform the camp director so that your child can meet-up with their group on course or alternative plans can be made. Start Time is 8:30 am.

Location

All Classes meet and end at the UC Aquatic Center. Meet each day at 8:30 A.M. sharp! We wait for late arrivals until 8:45. Pickup is at 4:00 P.M.

What to Bring

Each participant must arrive at camp with:

• Backpack (labeled with name) for ease of carrying gear around town
• Shoes or sandals that can be worn in the water (such as: Tevas, Keens, or Crocs. NO flip-flops please
• Closed toed shoes that can be worn for active play
• Comfortable pants or shorts
• Sweater, sweatshirt, or jacket
• One-Liter Water bottle
• Swimsuit & Towel & Hat
• Snack
• Bagged lunch with drinks
• Any group games or sporting equiment your child enjoys and would like to share

So that we can create the best group dynamics possible we discourage the use of the following during camp hours:

• Cell phones
• Game boys
• Electronic pets
• Pocket knives
• I-pods or other single-person music devices

Extended Care

If your child needs supervision outside of our regularly scheduled hours, choose the Extended Care Add-On when purchasing your camp. Our staff engages campers in active or quiet play during morning (7:30-8:30A), lunchtime (12:00-1.00P) and evening (4:00-5.30P) Extended Care programs. Need extended care for just one day? No need to pre-enroll. Simply complete a short form and submit it along with your payment to the camp office on the morning of that day. Price: $15 per time slot.

Except for Extended Care enrollees, there is no provision for students to remain at the aquatic center after the end of the class. Please be aware if you pick up your child late without signing up for extended care, a fee of $7.00 per quarter hour or fraction thereof is assessed beginning 15 minutes after the end of their camp day.
