Class Descriptions
20/20/10
Join us for a complete, invigorating noon-time workout. 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training and 10 minutes of stretching and flexibility work--everything you need!
Aqua Exercise / Aqua Challenge
Refreshing, pool-based workouts! Use water as resistance in exercises designed to work muscular and cardio systems. Try Aqua Challenge for a more intense, athletically-based workout. All fitness levels/non-swimmers welcome. (note: Hearst West Pool—women only)
Body Toning / Toning Express/ Abs & Back
Increase metabolism, strength and bone density using various methods of resistance training. Pressed for time? Try our 30-minute Express version or 25 minutes Abs&Back class.
Cardio Kickboxing / Extreme KB/ Power Kickboxing
By incorporating high intensity kicking routines with upper body drills, this class helps build stamina and coordination as you learn martial arts techniques. Extreme KB includes agility/stamina drills. Power KB adds strength training routines for an all-around workout.
Circuit Training
A certified personal trainer leads participants using free weights, machines, medicine balls, and plyo-balls to improve both upper and lower body strength, ab strength and flexibility. NOTE: This class requires prior sign up on a first come, first serve basis on the day of the class. Rec members should sign up at the turnstile desk in the RSF atrium.
Core Blast
Use the industry’s most versatile fitness tools -- the Bosu and Stability Balls -- to integrate all aspects of athletic training. Great workout for abdominal and lower back muscles too!
Core Flow
Looking for a new way to train your core? Sliding disks that allow you to flow from one movement to another adds a toning twist and a challenging full body workout. Get strong, lean and healthy in this 25 minute total body strengthening class.
Cardio Blast
It’s time to sweat! Prepare for a fun and cardio-challenging hour that combines high and low impact movements.
Group Cycling
A fun, mind-blowing indoor cycling workout fueled by motivating music. Combines cycling techniques with sport psychology methods employed by athletes of all disciplines. First time riders should arrive at least 10 minutes early to learn how to set up the bike. NOTE: This class requires prior sign up on a first come, first serve basis on the day of the class. Rec members should sign up at the turnstile desk in the RSF atrium.
Hip Hop/ Cardio Dance
Learn slammin’ new moves that you can take to the club in our urban dance workouts. No experience necessary. Cardio Dance combines traditional aerobic routines with dance-based choreography. No experience necessary.
HOOP DANCE
Join us for a total body workout! Using professional hula hoops, we explore tricks and dance moves as we build core strength, increase flexibility and have fun! No experience is necessary. Hoops will be provided for in-class use.
Introduction to Group X
Come out for an introductory educational class for BEGINNERS to learn the basics of different Group X classes as well as to further your understanding of the importance of fitness in daily life. Every Sunday, we will focus on a different type of Group X class. We will go over class structure, rules, goals/purpose, equipment, attire, technique, form, and basic moves. Class types include: Step, Yoga, Pilates, Kickboxing, Circuit Training, Cycle.

Mat Pilates / Pi-Yo / Pilates on the Ball
These classes use a series of controlled movements that engage your body and mind to build core muscles and to improve flexibility and strength without building bulk. For a different twist, fuse it with yoga in our Pi-Yo class or add a balance challenge with the Stability Ball.
Nia
It is a transformational movement practice that engages your body, mind, emotions and spirit. It draws from dance arts, martial arts and healing arts to create a purposeful movement.
Pure Strength
Build muscle, burn fat…no aerobics allowed! Rock out to your favorite tunes and develop a rock-hard body. Use effective training and lifting techniques to get stronger and leaner.
Rope Sport
A terrific 25-minute cardio challenge! Learn quick and effective jump-roping drills to help improve footwork, coordination and stamina. Don't know how to jump rope? No worries -- you will become a skilled roper after just a few sessions.
Step Classes: Basics | Power | Stepography | Boot Camp
We offer several levels of step, from basic and intermediate step. And once you’ve mastered step, take it up a notch with Stepography. Power Step & Step Boot Camp is fast paced cardio class that uses simple step movements along with weights, intervals, and calisthenics-- whatever it takes to get your heart rate up and you body in gear for an all-around workout.
Tai Chi
Originally developed as a martial art, Tai Chi reduces stress, promotes health, and creates mind/body/spirit alignment. Includes Chi Kung exercises & Yang style solo form.
Total Athletic Conditioning
Designed to be an ultimate cross-training workout, this class combines movements for various sports, boot camp drills, martial arts and muscle conditioning.
Yoga
Check out our yoga offerings! Learn how to use breathing techniques, sun salutations, and seated/standing poses to improve your sense of well-being. For the beginner or those looking to reduce stress, try Yoga Stretch/Yoga & Meditation. Intermediate and Inter/Adv. include Yoga and Hatha Yoga. For more rigorous workouts we offer Ashtunga Yoga, Power Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga. (Note: bare feet required). NOTE: Yoga classes held at Hearst Gym require prior sign up on the day of class. Please check the Group X Schedule for locations of classes. Members can sign up with the Hearst Locker Room staff in Hearst Gym.
Zumba
Get ready to bust out your dance moves and join us for a hour of Latin music and dancing. A fitness program inspired by Latin dances, Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow dance moves for an exhirlarating and fun aerobic workout.
Note: Cal Rec Club membership is required for participation in Group X classes.
