Job Description

The Cal Adventures Windsurfing Program operates from the Berkeley Marina at the UC Aquatic Center. Classes occur on weekends from March-November and occasional classes or custom events occur midweek.

  • Instruct Adult weekend Basic Windsurfing courses as scheduled by community program manager Instruct private lessons as requested by students
  • Instruct windsurfing custom events as scheduled by Community Program Manager
  • Ensure student and staff paperwork is being filled out in accordance to class policy
  • Assist in the revision and development of curriculum on file for instructors
  • Demonstrate safety assurance and control when on the water and in the classroom
  • Periodic equipment inspections and minor repairs
  • Enforce equipment organization and care among windsurfing staff, renters and students
  • Facilitate the increase of knowledge of natural environment, experiential education, group dynamic, weather, and gear care
  • Assist in updating Cal Adventures managers on specific site conditions and hazards
  • Serve as a representative of Cal Adventures to participants
  • Other projects as assigned

Minimum Skill Requirements

  • High level of experience and comfort level in windsurfing and windsurfing instruction
  • Experience leading windsurfing classes for both adults and youth
  • Familiarity with San Francisco Bay and the South Sailing Basin at the Berkeley Marina
  • Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role
  • CPR and First Aid  - or the ability to atain these certifications by the first day of employment
  • Well organized, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual

Preferred Skills

  • US Sailing Windsurfing Instructor Certification or equivalent
  • Competence, experience and skill with the use of small motor boats as teaching aids and rescue craft
  • Experience in sailing, kayaking, rafting or teambuilding
  • Experience with a cash register
  • Willingness to instruct advanced clinics for students wishing to learn specific skills such as harness use or waterstarting
