Pool Rules
Golden Bear
The Golden Bear Rec Center pool has six 25 yard lanes. The rec pool is located on Sports Lane adjacent to the campus intercollegiate gymnastics building overlooking the bay. Golden Bear pool is home to the Aquatics Masters Swim Team.
No swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
No eating, drinking, or smoking allowed on the pool deck.
No glass containers on pool deck.
No running on deck.
No diving allowed.
Bathing suits must be worn at all times (State of California Health Code).
No roughhousing or unsafe swimming.
Lifeguards have full authority over patrons using the pool area and may enforce rules not listed as situations warrant.
Circle swimming at all times.
NO hand paddles.
Swimmers should pass only at the wall.
If constantly passed, please move to a slower lane. If constantly passing, please move to a faster lane.
While resting at the wall, make room for other swimmers to turn.
Animals are not allowed in the pool area.
Bathing caps are recommended and may be required in the future.
No one will be permitted in the lifeguard chair(s) except the lifeguard.
No children under 16 are allowed in the swimming pool.
Hearst Gym- North Pool
The marble pool and intricate decking make Hearst pool an architectural landmark. The thirty three and one-third foot, four lane pool is available to campus and community adult rec swimmers year around. This pool is utilized by physical education classes during the academic year as well.
NO swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
NO smoking, eating or drinking allowed.
NO lotions or glass containers on the pool deck.
NO running or roughhousing allowed.
Sunbathing only on the upper levels.
Caps are required at Hearst pool for hair exceeding shoulder-length.
Circle swimming only.
Please observe the FAST/MEDIUM/SLOW lane designations. Within lanes, faster swimmers should tap the foot of the swimmer they wish to pass; at the end of the lap, the slower swimmer should pause to allow the other to pass.

Strawberry Canyon- West Pool
The natural beauty of the canyon provides a picturesque setting for the two pools, Bay Region style clubhouse, and team building ropes course. The recreational design of the Lucie Stern Pool easily accommodates recreational play and lap swim. The four lap lanes can be configured to 33 1/3 yards or 20 - 25 yards (variable with each lane) depending on the swimming season.
No swimming unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
No eating or drinking allowed on pool deck; no smoking allowed in the facility.
No glass containers on pool deck.
No running on the pool deck.
Diving allowed as safety permits and only in the diving tank.
No roughhousing or unsafe swimming.
Bathing suits must be worn at all times by all patrons using the facility (State of California Health Code). A plastic diaper holder must cover cloth and disposable diapers.
Topless sunbathing and "thong" bathing suits are not allowed in the facility.
Non-swimmers must be accompanied in the water by an adult and within arms length while in the pool. One adult per non-swimmer.
FLOTATION DEVICES are restricted to the shallow area of the pool. Children wearing flotation devices must be accompanied in the water by an adult at all times and within arms length.
Toys and swim equipment will be restricted at the discretion of the lifeguard based on safety concerns. No squirt guns or hard balls (tennis balls, etc) allowed in the pool and facility.
RAFTS are restricted based on the number of swimmers in the pool.
SCRA kickboards are for lap swim or instructional use only.
Bathing caps are recommended but not required.
No climbing on or over fences.
Bikes, animals, roller blades and skateboards are not allowed in the facility.
No one will be permitted in the lifeguard chairs except the lifeguard.
Swimmers who have questionable swimming skills will be asked to take the SWIM TEST.
Fifteen minute swim breaks will be called during high use periods (generally at 2p and 4p).
Wading Pool
- Health regulations require that swimming suits be worn by all tots using any of the pools and surrounding areas.
- Children must be accompanied by an adult within one arm’s length while using the wading pool or surrounding area.
Spieker Aquatic Complex
The Spieker Aquatic Complex houses a fifty meter swimming pool, sun decks and bleachers. It is shared by the intercollegiate aquatic teams: men's and women's waterpolo, swimming and diving, and rec swimmers on campus. Rec swimmers must be 16 years or older to swim in Spieker pool.
Although showers are not required, it is recommended that swimmers take showers before entering the pool.
Food and beverages only on the bleachers or upper deck. No glass containers anywhere in the aquatics facilities.
Caps are required at Spieker Pool for hair exceeding shoulder-length.
Only lap swimming is permitted. No diving, please! Kickboards and hand paddles are often restricted to certain lanes; please observe lane markers or the lifeguard's direction.

If you are not swimming fast enough a lifeguard may stop you and ask you to move to a slower lane.

Circle swimming is observed within the lanes. Please swim counter-clockwise, around the black lines at the bottom of the pool.

Lifeguards will enforce lap swimming etiquette as necessary.
Pool personnel are NOT responsible for any personal items brought to the pool.
Check bulletin boards, web site, and hotline for changes in schedules.
At no time other than competitive diving team practice are the diving boards to be used.
