Social Skills Track | Completed Grades 3 - 7

The Social Skills Track exists within Blue Camp, a large day camp at UC Berkeley for typically developing children. Campers are organized into groups of three or four campers and are assigned a specialized group leader who helps them through their day. The groups follow a daily schedule that includes minisocial skills sessions throughout the day as they are fully integrated into the camp experience. Parents of campers in this program have seen their child happy in an active environment and have noted lasting improvements and a willingness to try new things during the school year.

There are over 20 different sports and recreation activities running at Blue Camp and a schedule will be customized for each social skills track group. Blue campers, including those on the social skills track, have a set schedule with 6 activities that are set for the two weeks of camp. These activities will be selected to provide the maximum amount of success and learning. We will take into account the motor coordination of the campers as well as the instructors teaching the activity.

All campers have Red Cross swim lessons. Other activities that have been successful in the past are: basketball, volleyball, arts and crafts, field games, chess, card games and tricks, and soccer.

Leaders-In-Training Camp | Completed Grades 8-12

The Leaders in Training (LIT) camp is for kids that have completed 8th - 12th grade and who would benefit from support with social skills. This program gives youth an opportunity to learn leadership skills in the context of a camp environment. This program parallels our traditional counselor-in-training programs yet adds direct social skills support and activities designed to meet the LIT’s individual goals.

Staff

Dr. Jennifer H. Selke serves as program director and is on site with the program. Staff are recruited from university graduate programs in education and psychology as well as from existing camp staff. We also have a high school support team. Our highest priority is finding staff that understand this population and have a drive to help them learn to integrate, make friends, and have fun.

What makes our programs unique?

  • Youth are fully integrated with typically developing peers
  • Goals objectives are individualized
  • Social skills are taught in the environment and context where they are used
  • Sport skills are taught in a supportive environment
  • Kids feel successful with large groups of children at a typical day camp
  • Teens gain leadership and work place skills with their peers

How to Apply

To apply, you will need to complete both the Social Skills Track or Leaders-In-Training application AND the general Youth Registration Packet. You can download these application forms below:

All high school applicants will be interviewed in person to ensure proper placement, as there are two levels to the high school program. Several families who have attended camp serve on the reference and orientation committee. A list can be supplied to you if you are interested in speaking with someone about the program.
