Instructors provide instruction and supervision to campers at SCRA youth sports camp programs. Instructors are supervised by the individual Camp Coordinators and the Strawberry Canyon Youth Programs Director(s). Activity instructors must have experience with children (ages 5 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Instructors must be skilled in the activity to be taught and/or received formal training in activity. Instructors must also have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Experience teaching activity as an instructor, coach, etc. is required. Instructors must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required. Current American Red Cross (or equivalent) certifications in Standard First Aid & CPR (youth, adult) and including AED is strongly recommended.

Under the direct supervision of the DRS Aquatics Director and the Strawberry Canyon Youth Programs Director, the Aquatics Coordinator oversees the Strawberry Canyon Youth Programs swimming lesson programs: Group Lessons, Private Lessons, Camp Lessons, Advanced Aquatic Lessons, and pool parties. Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Aquatics Coordinators must be well organized, be able to set priorities, take direction and multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Applicants must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required. Experience supervising swim instructors, swimming lessons, & aquatics facilities is preferred.
I. SUPERVISION (35%)
* Supervise and evaluate swim staff working in specified program. Provide written evaluations on all staff.
* Organize, implement, and document training program including bi-weekly staff meetings.
* Assist Director to ensure staff have current required certifications and provide trainings as needed.
* As directed by supervisor, schedule staff and secure substitutes for swim lesson programs.

* Establish regular and open communication with on-site Camp Coordinators, CYOP Directors, Weekend Supervisor, etc.
* Administer first aid as needed and in accordance with set procedures.
* Evaluate existing programs and logistics on an ongoing basis and develop methods to improve program and service delivery.
* Ensure staff have safe and appropriate equipment and supplies.
* Develop and manage a system to return lost and found.

Counselors-In-Training (CITs) gain valuable training and experience by providing support to instructors and group leaders at camp. CITs are supervised by instructors, group leaders, individual Camp Coordinators, and the Strawberry Canyon Youth Programs Director(s). All applicants must have sensory abilities, e.g. hearing and sight, necessary to perform the duties of the position.
This is a training position. CITs are volunteers and are not paid. Ability to attend training is a condition of acceptance into the program. Completion of the CIT program does not imply or guarantee future employment with Strawberry Canyon.

Cal Adventures Activity Instructor
Under the supervision of the Youth Program Manager, a Cal Adventures Activity Instructor will lead groups of 8-17 year olds in a specific skill area. Cal Adventures activities include sailing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, and windsurfing. In addition to these activities we also have an adventure and discovery camp for which a broad outdoor knowledge in general activities and games is preferred. A minimum of Community First Aid and CPR certification and extensive experience teaching one or more of the skill areas is required. Instructors for Discovery and Adventure Camps are also asked to have a valid California Drivers License.
Cal Adventures Youth Instructor Job Description:
The Cal Adventures Youth Program operates from the UC Aquatic Center located at the Berkeley Marina. Classes occur Monday through Friday beginning in June and running through August. General tasks include:
- Teach assigned skill courses as scheduled by the Youth Program Manager.
- Use efficient risk management to monitor the environment where the activity is taking place.
- Periodic equipment inspections and minor repairs.
- Enforce equipment organization and care among staff and students.
- Facilitate the increase of knowledge about the natural environment, experiential education theory and practices, people management issues, weather and equipment care.
- Serve as a representative of Cal Adventures to students and other relevant organizations and individuals.
- Other projects as assigned.
Sailing Instructor Minimum Skill Requirements:
- High level of experience and comfort in high wind dinghy sailing and sailing instruction.
- US Sailing Instructor Certification or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience leading sailing classes for youth.
- Familiarity with San Francisco Bay and the South Sailing Basin at the Berkeley Marina.
- Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role.
- CPR and First Aid - or the ability to attain these certifications by the first day of employment.
- Competence, experience and skill with respect to the use of small motor boats as teaching aids and rescue craft.

EMT/Paramedic

The primary responsibility of the EMT/Paramedic is to provide care that emphasizes the use of appropriate skills, knowledge, and abilities (e.g. health care, first aid, and general support) to assure the comfort, safety, and well being of the Cal Youth & Outdoor summer youth sports and recreation participants (ages 5-15) and to the recreational swimming patrons (infants to adults). Individuals in this position must reflect a balance and understanding of both patient care needs and efficient SCRA program operations. The EMT/Paramedic reports directly to the Camp Coordinators and the Youth Program Director. All applicants must have sensory abilities, e.g. hearing and sight, necessary to perform the duties of the position.
I. Patient Care and Triage (40%)
* Develop, interpret, implement, evaluate and document a plan of care for patients (children and adults) consistent with University Health Service (UHS) and CYOP policies, procedures and guidelines.
* Establish a priority of care for patients and treat accordingly.
* When appropriate and if patients are able, encourage patients to rejoin classes or group.
* Demonstrate sensitivity and concern during all patient interactions.
* Recognize symptoms and diagnostic test results that deviate from normal. Follow through on abnormal findings in a timely manner using appropriate resources.
* Provide emergency first aid and health care utilizing EMT/paramedic skills and protocols as needed. Direct or assist staff in the implementation of emergency or health care procedures.
* Provide counseling to and interaction with participants regarding health care and other issues.

* Document assessments and interventions clearly, accurately, promptly, and concisely. Document accidents, incidents, or health issues as appropriate. Process Accident Reports, Incidents Reports, Child Abuse forms when needed.

II. CHILD SUPERVISION AND CLASS MANAGEMENT (40%)
* Maintain a safe class atmosphere and keep constant watch over participants
* Follow check-in/out procedures
* Walk children safely between meeting location and pool, monitor locker room changes when applicable
* Demonstrate good judgement
* Resolve disciplinary problems appropriately, complete Incident Reports as needed
III. ADMINISTRATIVE (15%)
* Demonstrate responsibility in regard to work schedule, meetings & trainings
* Demonstrate responsibility toward equipment, e.g. clipboard, pool toys, pool covers and supplies (keep in order, well maintained, and return to their proper location)
* Complete and submit paperwork accurately and on time (course record sheets, progress reports, attendance, timesheets, lesson plans, etc.)
* Maintain and submit copy of current certifications as listed in the job description
* Follow all aquatic program, pool facility, camp, and emergency policies & procedures
IV. OTHER (5%)
* Dress in appropriate and well maintained attire/uniform while instructing. Instructors are required to purchase their own navy blue one-piece or two-piece workout swimsuit.
* Maintain a positive attitude while working, help wherever needed, work well with co-workers
* Display good customer service skills, especially with the public, parents, and recreational swimmers
* Accept feedback and make necessary corrections
* Display appropriate behavior (action and language) around campers, parents, and staff
* Perform miscellaneous tasks as requested by supervisor
V. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & CURRENT CERTIFICATIONS
* American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor - required
* CPR for the Professional Rescuer - required
* American Red Cross Lifeguard Training - required

Volunteers assist in the administration of the program and in the execution of camp logistics such as registration, drop-off, pick-up and equipment set up and take down. In addition, volunteers assit the Recreation Program Instructor to organize and conduct classes. They also help with general supervision of the campers. All applicants must have sensory abilities, e.g. hearing and sight, necessary to perform the duties of the position.
I. PROGRAM/INSTRUCTION (55%)
* Assist activity specialists in teaching skills and techniques of program activity. Provide support for activity specialist during instructional process. Promote enthusiasm and encouraging atmosphere for campers.
* Assist in providing general supervision and promote safe participation in programs.
II. ADMINISTRATION (40%)
* Record volunteer hours; submit signed record of volunteer hours to supervisor on or before monthly deadline.
* Notify supervisor when you are absent or late.
* Greet campers daily and assist with check-in and attendance procedures.
* Assist participants in locating activities and traveling between program activities. Escort participants back to facility as necessary.
* Help maintain equipment storage areas and equipment inventories.
* Assist in the set-up and take-down of equipment. Assist in the clearing, inspection, inventory, and return of program equipment on a daily basis. Inform Activity Specialist of any defects in athletic equipment.
* Assist in the organization of the lunch break and the lunch time activity for full-day camps.
* Assist with the monitoring and tracking of attendance during activities and the lunch break.
* Retrieve and return lost and found items as necessary.
* Provide administrative and logistical support to Camp Coordinators and Strawberry Canyon administrative staff.
* Assist in the release of campers to authorized pick-up persons at the end of the camp day.
* Assist in the execution of first aid or emergency procedures as necessary.
* Complete and submit paperwork accurately
III. OTHER (5%)
* Maintain appropriate behavior around participants at all times (e.g. no swearing, no inappropriate touching, etc.).
* Dress in appropriate attire. Wear program-issued shirt while volunteering.
* Demonstrate responsibility in regard to volunteer schedule, meetings & trainings, and workshops as required.
